Hike the Colorado Trail. The 486-mile trail begins at the Kenosha Pass summit, just northeast of Fairplay. It’s one of the best places to watch the aspen trees change in the fall, but be aware that you might run into a crowd of fellow leaf peepers.

History of Fairplay, Colorado
Fairplay was founded in 1859 at the onset of the gold rush. Like many of the neighboring towns like Alma, Fairplay was built on mining. Eventually, the town became known for ranching.
Fairplay got its name from prospectors hoping to instill a spirit of camaraderie in their new home — a sentiment still evident in Fairplay’s community today. As part of the South Park National Heritage Area, Fairplay plays an important part in driving the region’s commerce and recreation forward, much like it shaped its roots more than 160 years ago.
