Outdoor adventures

Central location
When you’re ready to explore outside Alma’s boundaries, you won’t have to go far. Breckenridge is about a half-hour drive and full of skiing opportunities, including groomed slopes and backcountry. We’re 1 hour 45 minutes southwest of Denver and two hours from Boulder, the perfect not-too-distant getaway for those who want to get out of the cities.
When the weather warms up, Buena Vista Hot Springs is about 40 minutes from Alma, and you’ll find abundant gold medal trout fishing, renown for their quality, in the nearby South Platte River. Historical significance
Alma held its first municipal meeting more than 150 years ago. In the century-plus since, Alma has made its name as a place of historic significance, as the heart of the Mosquito Range Mining District where many mined during the Gold Rush.

Spearheaded by the Alma Foundation, community leadership has undertaken several notable projects over the years, including building the Alma Riverwalk in 2022 and Stone Church’s restoration in 2004. The Foundation also puts on events, festivals, and sporting events year-round.

Enjoy a leisurely outdoor afternoon, try an adrenaline-pumping activity, or connect with the community at one of our local events. There are so many ways to have fun in Alma:
Visit the Festival in the Clouds. Come together to celebrate the summer with all of Alma at this annual event, full of food and festivities.
Enjoy autumn leaf-peeping. Alma’s got a short fall foliage season, but for a brief moment, Alma gets even more beautiful as everything turns from green to golden.
Hike to the Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area. At the eastern edge of Mount Bross, you’ll find wind-sculpted Bristlecone Pine Trees towering thousands of feet overhead, many of which have been standing for thousands of years.
Go ghost hunting. If a supernatural adventure sounds like your kind of fun, Alma’s rich history has left a few haunted hidden gems you can explore (if you’re brave enough). Be on the lookout for the ghost of Silver Heels, a nurse who cared for smallpox patients before contracting the disease herself.
Hop on a local trail. Alma’s an outdoorsman’s dream, with seemingly-endless options for things to do under the sun (or moon, if camping is your thing). Trails like the Beaver Creek Trail and Mount Silverheads (Upper Beaver Creek) are minutes from the heart of our town.
History of Alma, Colorado
Alma has held the title of highest-standing incorporated town in the U.S. since 1873, when legend has it the town was named in honor of a local grocery store owner’s daughter.
Alma developed as a mining town, with hard rock mines in Mount Bross, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Democrat. It’s hard to imagine that our now quaint town once had a booming population of close to 10,000, when Buckskin Gulch was brimming with gold.
Many of our buildings date back to the 1890s or even older, including the Schwartz Hotel, the Clesson Cabin, and the Alma Ladies Aid Hall. Be sure to visit Stone Church on South Main Street, built entirely by hand by the community in 1936!
While the last pickaxes were put down much more than a century ago, the remnants of Alma’s mining history add to the town’s quaint charm. From old mills to the last surviving building of Alma’s Branch of the Boston and Colorado Smelting Company, our town is full of remnants that any history buff would love to see. Over the last 30 to 40 years, great efforts have been made to revive and repurpose some of the town’s oldest buildings, including the historic Town Hall.
